I have been experimenting with various finishes on the runes and idols. I have tried various oil, acrylic, and polyurethane varnishes, stains, mediums, and even sprays. The varnishes stained the wood like dirty French fries, the stains were too dark, the mediums felt gummy, and the sprays made the runes feel plastic rather than wood. But today, I discovered a bottle of linseed oil at the bottom of my oil painting set, I never much got into oil painting on canvas, but I think it might win me over on wood. The linseed oil creates a beautiful finish that brings out the beauty of the wood grain and soaks in to allow the runes to retain their natural feeling. I am very pleased!

The ones on the left are unfinished, and those on the right are oiled.

Also, I have taken a renewed interest in Sheila Na Gigs and you can see in the photo that I have developed my own idols based on the Irish ones. I love these little crone goddesses and at my last coven meeting my coven mates each wanted one for themselves. Long live the crones!
